Blackboards is a series that involves photographs and paintings of classroom blackboards. The work is densely layered and alludes to individual and cultural memory. I am, of course, using the blackboard, with its layerings and erasures, as a metaphor for mind.  The work reminds us of the memories and thoughts which flood, interrupt and constitute our mental life.

The first of these pieces layers transparent images of children’s faces with blackboard writing and children’s textbook  illustrations. This piece was initially made as part of a collaborative artwork with Lisa Lewenz. Our installation was part of a show called Other Rooms housed in a former public school in Washington, DC.
